David Sherman: Professional Football Player/Father Walks Again

Sports and athletic competition defined David Sherman’s life.  As a former part-time NFL Washington Redskin and European football player, he played through countless injuries as he pursued his dream of a professional sports career.  At 6’ 8” and 280 lbs, Sherman had the size and tenacity to make that dream come true.

By age 27, injuries had taken their toll.  Years of playing with bad knees and fractured ankles left him in constant pain and unable to walk without assistance.  As a father, he didn’t even have the strength to run and play with his young son.  Sherman became reliant on heavy doses of daily pain medications to simply exist.  After seeking counsel from a dozen physicians to fix his legs and ankles, he had given up hope.  That was, until he picked up a copy of the January 2008 issue of Runners World magazine while sitting in the doctor’s office.  It was in that magazine that he read about double amputee Scott Rigsby.  Images on the page of Scott at the Ford Ironman World Championship triathlon flying in the air on his prosthetic running legs sent Sherman’s heart bounding too.

Sherman saw the possibilities!  He knew that he was reading this magazine for a reason. Showing the doctor the article, he immediately asked him to remove both of his legs below the knee.  After further counseling with staff and family members, two weeks later, David Sherman became a double amputee.  On February 27th, 2008, Sherman lost his disabled legs and on May 4th, 2008, David Sherman walked without the all-too-familiar pain that had plagued him for years.   Soon after, his new prosthetic legs carried him into a restaurant for the celebration of his 29th birthday and on into his very bright future.
